CPKN Community of Practice

Terms of Use and Guidelines

Welcome to The Network, Canadian Police Knowledge Network’s (CPKN) Community of Practice. To ensure the best possible user experience for all community members, there are basic guidelines and terms of use for participation. Use the communities to solicit advice from your peers, participate in discussions, and benefit from the experience of public safety professionals from across the country.

By joining The Network Communities of Practice, you confirm that you have read and will follow the rules and guidelines outlined below. Questions about the site should be directed to CPKN.

Take a moment to review these important guidelines. If you have any questions, please contact the Site Administrator at CPKN.

The Rules

Be Respectful: The most important focus is the posts and the information shared, not the individual making the post. Give new users the benefit of the doubt and remember there are no stupid questions.

How to Use the Community: Please use this space to share information, education resources, best practices, seek feedback, ask questions, share success stories and collaborate on initiatives for the public safety community. Share helpful products or services and your experiences with them in a way that is respectful. Do not promote products or services.

Be Cautious About Promoting or Discussing Products: Information shared in discussion groups and in community forums is available for all members of The Network to see. Comments could be subject to libel, slander, antitrust and privacy laws.

Be Mindful of Intellectual Property: Only post and share content that you have created or have permission to use and share. Please remember to properly document and give credit to the source of the content.

Be Clear About Restrictions in Sharing or Reuse: Before sharing materials, contact the owner of the materials to get permission prior to reusing or reproducing it.

Share Information in the Most Appropriate Community: This helps to keep messaging on topic and receives the best response from other members.

Do not post defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive or illegal materials: Only post things that you would feel comfortable with individuals outside of the Community of Practice knowing came from you.

Do Not Reproduce Materials Without Consent: Do not print, download or reproduce any material without the written permission of CPKN and the poster of the material.

Understand Applicable Privacy Laws: Do not post or share personal information without the consent of the individual. Posted materials could be accessible through access to information legislation.

Guidelines for Discussion Groups

Remember to direct any administrative requests about being added or removed from a list to the CPKN site administrator or community administrator.
Within your account settings, you will be able to manage and update the frequency and type of emails that you receive from The Network.

You can message individuals directly, for direct and personal messages, consider using this format to reduce personal messages in large group threads.

Be clear in your subject lines so that other members can better understand and respond most appropriately to your message.
